Hayek, the CEO of Swatch, the Swiss company known for its bright,
popular watches in the 1980s, had been searching for years for a
company to build the easy-to-park "Swatchmobile" he envisioned.
In 1994,
Mercedes-Benz and Swatch founded the Micro Compact Car AG.
Eventually, the name was changed to Smart -- an acronym for "Swatch
Mercedes ART" -- and the two companies teamed up to build a factory
in Hambach, France
